You might not have recognized it yet, but you have surely seen it somewhere: an oddly adorable bag charm called ‘Labubu.’
It comes in different colors, sizes, and styles; some are even dressed in clothes. Labubu has easily become the newest craze among collectors and enthusiasts.
But what is it exactly?
Here are five facts you want to know about the Labubu dolls:
1. It started out as a storybook character from the illustrations of Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung. It is part of a larger ecosystem of characters from his book ‘The Monsters.’
In 2019, Lung partnered with global toy manufacturer Pop Mart to bring his drawings to life as plushies, toys, and keychains.
2. Labubu is a female elf; yes, she has a gender, and she has a pleasing personality, too. Pop Mart refers to Labubu using the pronouns ‘she/her.’
3. Labubu bag charms come in two variations: the ‘Macaron’ and ‘Have A Seat’ collections, which are version 1 and version 2 of the toy, respectively.
The Macaron collection, on the one hand, was released in 2023. It features seven designs of Labubus in standing positions, each expressing one emotion, in different colors. There is a ‘secret’ Labubu that is released in a 1:72 ratio.
The Have A Seat collection, on the other hand, launched in July 2024, features seven designs of seated Labubus with different emotions. It still includes the ‘secret’ doll, named ‘Duo-Duo,’ also in a 1:72 ratio.
4. Labubu owes much of its fame to K-Pop star Blackpink's Lisa, who posted on Instagram from August to September, holding and taking photos with different versions of the toy.
5. The creator revealed that the Labubus are inspired by the iconic blue animated characters, the Smurfs. Other characters include Zimomo, their clan’s leader (comparable to Papa Smurf), and Tycoco, among others.
